Why do songs get stuck in your head?
A stuck song — an earworm — is an involuntary musical memory caught on a loop. It happens because catchy, simple, repetitive tunes are easy for the brain to replay, and an unfinished loop tends to keep repeating. It's extremely common and almost always harmless.
Why a fragment loops
Earworms are usually a short slice of a song — a hook, not the whole thing — replaying on repeat. Two features make a tune sticky: it's simple and repetitive enough to loop easily, and it has a small surprise or leap that makes it distinctive. The mind seems to treat an unfinished phrase as an open loop it wants to close, so it keeps cycling.
What sets one off
Common triggers include recent or repeated exposure to the song, stress, and — crucially — mind-wandering. Earworms love an idle or lightly occupied mind, which is why they surface in the shower or on a commute.
How to dislodge one
- Play the song to the end. Completing the loop can close it — the open-loop is part of what keeps it going.
- Engage an absorbing task — a puzzle, a conversation, anything that occupies the same mental space.
- Chew gum. Oddly, occupying the mouth's motor system has been shown to reduce earworms.
Earworms are a normal feature of a musical memory, not a malfunction. Nearly everyone gets them, and they pass on their own.
