A runaway trolley will kill five people ahead. You can pull a lever to divert it onto a side track, where it will kill one. Should you pull it? Most say yes — until a second version asks them to get the same result by pushing a person, and almost everyone refuses. That gap is the point.

Push the stranger?

Five people are on the track below. The only way to stop the trolley is to drop a heavy weight in its path — and the only heavy weight is a large stranger standing beside you on the footbridge. Push, and one dies but five live. The arithmetic is identical to before.

If you pulled the lever but could not bring yourself to push the stranger, you are in good company — most people answer exactly that way. And that is philosophically strange, because in pure arithmetic the two cases are the same: one death to prevent five. Something other than the numbers is doing the work in our judgment. Naming that something is what the trolley problem is really for.

Where it came fromA lever, and a puzzle.

The philosopher Philippa Foot introduced the core scenario in 1967, while thinking about abortion and the ethics of doing versus allowing harm. Judith Jarvis Thomson later sharpened it, added the footbridge variant, and gave the puzzle its name. What began as a footnote became one of the most discussed thought experiments in modern ethics — and, lately, a live problem for anyone programming a self-driving car.

Some acts are wrong regardless of outcome. Using a person as a mere means — shoving them to their death — crosses a line that merely foreseeing a death does not.

The gap between the lever and the footbridge is often explained by the doctrine of double effect: harm caused as a side effect of a good act (diverting the trolley) is treated as more permissible than harm used as the means to that good (pushing the man to stop it). Whether that distinction is a deep moral truth or just a feature of our psychology is exactly what philosophers still argue about.

Why it still mattersThe lever is everywhere.

Real institutions pull versions of this lever constantly — in triage, in policy, in the code that will steer autonomous vehicles. The trolley problem does not hand us the answer. It does something more useful: it shows us, in a single vivid frame, that our moral intuitions are not a single consistent system, and it asks which of them we are willing to stand behind. This is a thought experiment about hypotheticals, not a guide to real decisions — its value is in the reflection, not a verdict.
