What makes someone the first philosopher? For Aristotle, who bestowed the title, it was a matter of method. Before Thales, the Greeks explained the world through stories of gods — lightning was Zeus, the sea was Poseidon. Thales, living in the trading city of Miletus around the sixth century BCE, tried something different: he sought to explain nature by nature itself, looking for underlying principles rather than divine personalities.
His famous conclusion was that water is the fundamental substance from which everything derives. To modern ears this sounds quaint, but the reasoning behind it — that beneath the world's variety lies some single unifying principle discoverable by thought — is one of the deepest assumptions of science itself. He was asking the right question, and asking it in the right spirit, even if his specific answer did not survive.

Thales was the earliest of the Milesian thinkers, a group who each proposed a different fundamental principle — one suggested an indefinite 'boundless,' another air. What united them was the conviction that the universe is intelligible and can be understood through reason and observation. Tradition also credits Thales with practical achievements, including predicting a solar eclipse and applying geometry to real problems, though the details are hard to verify across so many centuries.
Almost nothing he wrote survives, and much of what we know comes through later reports, especially Aristotle. This makes the historical Thales genuinely elusive. But his importance is not really about water, or even about any single discovery. It is about a turn in human thinking: the decision to treat the world as a puzzle to be reasoned out rather than a drama authored by gods. Every philosopher and scientist who followed inherited that turn from him.
