Mary has never
seen red.

She is the world's greatest expert on colour. She knows every wavelength, every cone cell, every neural pathway that fires when a human eye meets a rose. She knows all of it — from inside a room where everything, including Mary, is black, white, and grey. Today the door opens. The question is simple, and it has troubled philosophy for forty years: does she learn anything new?

Mary's Room is Frank Jackson's 1982 thought experiment. Mary knows every physical fact about colour but has only ever seen greyscale. If she learns something new the moment she first sees red, then some facts about experience — what red is like — are not physical facts, and physicalism is false. This is the knowledge argument, and how you answer reveals what you think experience really is.

01 · Wavelength+
Light we call red sits at roughly 620–750 nanometres, the longest wavelengths the human eye detects. Mary knows the figure exactly. She has never seen what it looks like.

Long-wavelength (L) cones in the retina respond most strongly to these wavelengths. Mary knows their absorption curves precisely, and how the signal is coded — every step of the mechanism.
03 · The neural pathway+
The signal travels the optic nerve to the visual cortex, where area V4 helps process colour. Mary has memorised every synapse in the chain, every region that lights up.
04 · The physics of the rose+
A red rose absorbs shorter wavelengths and reflects the long ones toward the eye. Mary can predict, to the photon, exactly which light will reach a viewer. Every objective fact is hers.

Did Mary just learn something new?

She already knew every physical fact about this moment. If seeing red taught her nothing, physicalism holds. If she just learned what red is like — that was a fact her science never contained.

Frank Jackson set the trap gently, in a 1982 paper, and it has never quite been sprung. Imagine Mary, a scientist who has learned everything physical science could ever teach about colour vision — the wavelengths, the retina, the cortex, the lot — but who has spent her whole life inside a black-and-white room, seeing the world only on a monochrome monitor. By hypothesis, she knows every physical fact there is. Then one day she walks out, and for the first time sees a red rose.

The question is whether she learns anything. And the pull of the intuition is strong: it certainly seems she does — she finally learns what seeing red is like. But here is the sting. She already knew every physical fact. So if she learns something new, that new something cannot be a physical fact. And if there are facts that are not physical facts, then physicalism — the view that reality is exhaustively physical — is false. That is the knowledge argument, and it fits into three tidy lines that are far harder to escape than they look.

Each reply has force, and each has critics. Does "knowing what red is like" really reduce to a knack for imagining it? Can a fact you genuinely already possessed still ambush you when you finally live it? The debate turns, in the end, on whether the felt quality of experience — its qualia — is the kind of thing a complete physical description could ever contain.

Here is the detail that keeps the story honest. Frank Jackson, who built the argument and made it famous, later abandoned it. He came to think the knowledge argument, however seductive, must be going wrong somewhere, and he returned to a physicalist view — arguing that our conviction that Mary learns a new fact is an illusion produced by how differently experience and description present the same reality. The inventor of philosophy's sharpest anti-physicalist weapon decided, on reflection, to lay it down.
